In the culinary world, names often carry assumptions, and one such assumption surrounds chicken masala and meat masala – that they contain non-vegetarian ingredients. However, Akash Agrawal, Co-founder, Zoff Foods, sheds light on this misconception, revealing the surprising truth behind these spice blends.

Contrary to popular belief, chicken masala and meat masala are crafted from purely vegetarian spices and fresh herbs. Agrawal emphasizes that these masalas are designed to enrich flavors and enhance the palatability of dishes, whether they contain meat or not. Ingredients such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, fennel seeds, nutmeg, garlic, ginger, black pepper, and cardamom form the foundation of these masalas, all of which are entirely vegetarian.

Sumit Chauhan, NPD Head, Pansari Group, echoes Agrawal’s sentiment, stating that it’s natural for vegetarians to assume otherwise. However, he emphasizes that the spice blends in chicken masala and meat masala predominantly consist of vegetarian elements, including cumin, fennel, black salt, black pepper, and more. Chauhan highlights the versatility of these masalas, emphasizing their suitability for various vegetarian dishes.

Despite their names, chicken masala and meat masala offer a testament to the richness spices bring to vegetarian cuisine. These masalas provide a flavorful journey through vegetarian cooking, showcasing that delicious meals can be enjoyed without compromising dietary preferences.

To ensure clarity for consumers, both Agrawal and Chauhan advocate for checking product labels certified by FSSAI (Food Safety Standards Authority of India). A green circle indicates a purely vegetarian product, while a brown circle signifies the presence of non-vegetarian ingredients.

In conclusion, chicken masala and meat masala may sound non-vegetarian, but they are indeed suitable for vegetarians, contributing to the vibrant world of vegetarian cuisine with their rich flavors and aromatic profiles. So, the next time you reach for these masalas, rest assured that you’re indulging in a purely vegetarian culinary delight.
