Onions are an integral part of Indian delicacies so much so that most of the dishes are incomplete without this spice. However, do you know that onions are nutritious and offer more than just taste quotient? As per the Healthline portal, onions have many antioxidants and sulfur-containing compounds. They have been linked to a reduced risk of cancer, lower blood sugar levels, and improved bone health. This space articulates the benefits of eating onions in the Summer season.

1. Reduce sunburn in the summers- Onion’s anti-inflammatory properties may help in soothing sunburned skin.

2. Reduces Body Heat- Onions have a cooling effect as they are a storehouse of quercetin, which acts as an anti-allergen. It is also important to protect the people from sunstroke.

3. Keeps body hydrated- Onion comprises a high quantity of water which helps to keep the body hydrated. The sulfur compounds are known to stimulate the immune system.

4. Storehouse of antioxidants- According to Healthline, onions are known to be an excellent source of antioxidants and comprise 17 types of flavonoids. Red onions particularly contain anthocyanins which may protect against diabetes and certain types of cancers.

5. Prevents anti-inflammation properties- The antioxidants present in onions help fight inflammation by defending against free radicals. Free radicals are compounds that circulate in the body and can lead to cell damage, leading to wrinkling, and other early signs of ageing. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals so they can’t inflict damage.

6. Onions may help you in treating acne- Onions contain a naturally occurring sulfuric acid called Diluted sulfur which can be used to treat some types of acne. There is, however, a lack of studies to explore this but many people have opined that certain companies use onion juice in some over-the-counter acne products.

Onion also contains Vitamin C which is known to increase the speed of your cell turnover, which can help decrease breakouts, lessen redness, and brighten up your skin.

7. Onions comprise prebiotic properties- Onions contain a type of fibre called inulin, which acts as a prebiotic. These exacerbate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which can improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, and support overall gut health.
