Nearly 40% of food is thrown away in the United States every year. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, that adds up to more than $160 billion waste each year. There’s nothing worse than being forced to throw away dairy products, just because it was stored improperly. Here’s how to store the milk without a refrigerator, so it lasts as long as possible and tastes great.

Find a cool place

Find the coolest place in your house, such as a basement or cool closet. Keep it out of the sun and try to keep the temperature consistent.

Use a closed container

Store your milk in a tightly sealed container to protect it from harmful influences. A glass or metal container with a tight-fitting lid works well.

Keep it away from heat

Make sure milk is not near heat sources such as stoves or ovens. Heat can cause bacteria to grow and spoil.

Cool down with water

To keep milk cooler, wrap a damp cloth or paper towel around the container. As the water dries, it draws heat from the milk and cools it.

Store in clay pots

In some places, people use special clay pots to keep food cool in hot weather. They work by using the evaporation of water to stay cool. You can use them for milk too.

Use a cooler

If you have a well-insulated cooler, that’s a great way to keep your milk cool. Put ice packs in it and store your milk in it. Remember to replace the ice to keep it cold.

Wrap in a blanket

Cover your milk container with a towel or blanket to keep it cool, especially in hot weather.

Check the temperature

If you have a thermometer, try to keep the milk at 7-10°C (45-50°F). This will help keep it fresh.
