EVs have firmly established themselves as the pivotal technology in the global shift towards sustainable mobility.
Electric Vehicles (EVs) have firmly established themselves as the pivotal technology in the global shift towards sustainable mobility. As countries worldwide accelerate their transition to zero-emission mobility, EVs are gaining significant traction. Initially adopted by environmentally conscious consumers and technology buffs in the premium segment, the appeal of EVs is now expanding to a much broader, diverse demographic, particularly among value-conscious buyers across the length and breadth of the country.

The sight of an EV charging or signage for a public charging station in the vicinity is no longer a rarity. We are seeing more and more of these every day, even in cities and locations we perhaps didn’t expect to see it. So, why this change? What is making EVs the right choice for today’s car buyers?

Recent global surveys reveal some compelling reasons driving this shift. Positive impact on the environment, pocket friendly cost of ownership, exhilarating driving experience and superior comfort coming with zero noise (EVs use motors and not engine)—are turning to be the major attractions for consumers.

ETAuto spoke to a few EV owners to find out why they made the switch, uncovering numerous benefits that make EVs irresistible. But let’s start from the beginning.

When inquiring about their decision to buy an EV, most owners cited word-of-mouth recommendations from other members of the EV community and friends and family as pivotal in their purchase decisions. While some had experienced EVs during trips abroad, others believed it was the responsible choice. Regardless of the catalyst, most shared positive experiences about owning and using an EV, confirmed that they wouldn’t switch back to cars using engines and that their next car would undoubtedly be an EV too!

Better driving experience
Arjun K, a Delhi-based banker said, “There’s no going back after driving an EV. The smooth, exhilarating drive is unmatched, with none of that engine noise or the jerky gear shifts. It’s quiet and feels good. I love their acceleration, effortless performance (instant torque), smooth drive, and zero emissions. I can never go back to driving my dad’s petrol car. Plus, driving an EV is way better for the planet, which is a huge bonus. It’s about embracing a lifestyle that’s in tune with the future, where every step in every journey is cleaner and greener.”

Near zero operating costs
Another owner Prabhat Kumar, who runs a garments business in Jaipur emphasized the financial benefits, noting, “I travel between my home, shop and workshop, driving about 60-70 km every day. Fuel savings are a big plus, as is the convenience of home charging.” With electricity prices being much lower than petrol and diesel costs, the operational costs associated with owning an EV are significantly lower. “My cousin has installed a solar panel on his rooftop and doesn’t even have to pay for electricity! I plan to do the same as well and enjoy zero cost mobility”, he added. The growing popularity of rooftop solar installations make charging an EV even more economical. Further, the Government is actively promoting rooftop solar adoption by offering subsidies, making renewable energy more accessible and affordable for all.

Minimal service and maintenance
“My visits to the workshop or expenses on routine servicing and maintenance have significantly reduced. I’m saving both time and money. And the way regen automatically charges the battery every time I use the brakes is just magical”, said Anoop Kodigeri, a startup founder in Mysore.

EVs boast significantly lower maintenance costs – averaging about 50% less than their ICE counterparts. With only around about 200 moving parts compared to over 1,000 in traditional vehicles, EVs eliminate the need for oil changes, transmission flushes, and emissions-related inspections.

The regenerative braking in EVs reduces brake wear, further decreasing maintenance and repair expenses over time. With lesser components to service, EVs also experience less downtime, requiring only basic checks on lights, brakes, tires, suspension, and steering, along with diagnostic assessments of the electric systems.

Clean Air and Environment
“I actively work to map and reduce my carbon footprint. After evaluating all available options, I chose an EV because it produces zero emissions”, says Bengaluru-based civil and social activist, Ritika Bhasin. “The worsening air quality in our cities is alarming, and I feel a moral obligation to contribute to a cleaner environment. Driving an EV gives me peace of mind, knowing that I am doing my part to ensure a better future for my children. Its not just about owning a car or being mobile. Its about making a positive contribution to the environment and ensuring a healthier future for everyone."

India faces one of the most severe air quality crises, with 14 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world. Pollution levels exceed safe limits several times during the year. EVs, with their zero tailpipe emissions, offer a tangible solution to address the growing problem of air pollution and high AQI. Further, the absence of a traditional engine results in silent operation, reducing noise pollution.

Recent advancements in battery technology have led to longer ranges and faster charging times, making EVs more appealing to a broader audience. Many new models now offer ranges that exceed 300plus km on a single charge, alleviating range anxiety. Additionally, improvements in charging infrastructure, including fast-charging stations, allow drivers to recharge their vehicles significantly quicker than before, making them even more convenient for both intracity and intercity use.

EV is the right choice
Whichever way you look at it, the case for owning an electric vehicle has never been stronger. With rich ownership experience, reduced maintenance costs, lower operational expenditures, and a positive environmental impact, it’s clear that EVs represent the smart choice for today’s car buyers. With a wide range of vehicles now available at multiple price points in various body styles and offering different ranges, if you are looking for a car, you must choose an EV.
