JSW MG looks to repurpose used EV batteries, eyes big with 'Select'

JSW MG Motor India is eyeing to tap into the premium car segment with its initiative MG Select

New Delhi: In a bid to take a lead in the EV ecosystem, JSW MG Motor has introduced a pilot project to address the concerns regarding the second-life of the EV battery. The initiative comes in collaboration with Vision Mechatronics.

Under the partnership, JSW MG Motor India will provide damaged EV batteries to Vision Mechatronics which will repurpose it with a homegrown battery management system (BMS) for second-life usage in large-scale energy storage.

“We are working purely on damaged batteries right now-- in case there is a requirement that some battery is impacted and it is not worthy for being on the road then it will be shared with Vision Mechatronics,” Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer, JSW MG Motor India, told ETAuto.

“The various chemistries give different energy output based on what requirement is there. So the battery life exceeds the life of the car, that is the way to see it," Dr. Rashi Agarwal, Managing Director, Vision Mechatronics said.

In the initial phase, it will focus on a 36 kW UPS backup solution as it is a "low-hanging fruit". The first product has been deployed for an industrial facility in Pune.

MG Select

Eyeing to tap into the premium car segment, JSW MG Motor India has recently introduced 'MG Select' for retail experience to its customers. This will include the upcoming products including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and EVs.

The company has a plan to launch four new models in the next two years. Two of these cars will be launched in Q1 CY2025, Gupta said.

Under the Phase-1 of its plan, MG Select looks to open 12 dealerships by the next six months. This includes cities like Pune, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Cochin, Bangalore, among others.
