Skoda’s global initiatives like the Azubi Student Car Project emphasise the importance of hands-on learning.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has reimagined a pickup truck concept through its student car project, aligning with the government's 'Skill India' initiative. This year, Mechatronics students created the innovative vehicle by combining elements from the Volkswagen Taigun SUV and Volkswagen Virtus sedan over nine months.

The project included phases such as concept finalisation, market analysis, research and development, and final car testing for launch. Students showcased their skills by designing and 3D-printing parts, and equipping the truck with unique features like underbody protection, studded tyres, ambient lighting, and roof-mounted lights.

Industry mentorship and skill development

Under the mentorship of SAVWIPL professionals, students worked with suppliers and industry experts to bring their ideas to life. This initiative is part of the company’s efforts to support the skill development of youth, as highlighted in the Union Budget 2024. SAVWIPL academy's dual vocational training program, launched in 2011, has played a crucial role in upskilling high school students through a full-time 3.5-year course modeled on Germany’s vocational system.

The project aligns with Skoda's global strategies, such as the Azubi student car project under the Škoda Academy, which showcases the high level of training at its vocational school while supporting the 'Skill India' initiative. This practical experience helps students understand theoretical concepts and enhance their manufacturing skills, the company said in a media release.

A platform for future innovators

Andreas Dick, Member of the Board of Management for Production and Logistics at Skoda Auto, stated, “The successful completion of student car project 2.0 in India is a showcase of how young talent can learn to use cutting-edge technology, precision, and efficiency to create industry-leading vehicles. By bringing global manufacturing practices to India, our goal is to create environments where young innovators can grow into the changemakers of tomorrow, strengthening India’s role as a global manufacturing hub."

"Our such projects not only focus on strengthening manufacturing capabilities but also ensure that the next generation is ready to drive innovation on a global scale,” he added.

Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited, said, “It is impressive to see the unique concept of developing a Pickup truck by our Mechatronics students as a part of the Student Car Project. Our unique student car project, is a great platform that gives wings to the imagination of the students to share the future of mobility."

The pickup truck project reflects a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, providing students with a comprehensive learning experience. By incorporating advanced design and manufacturing techniques, students not only developed a rugged pickup truck but also gained valuable insights into the automotive industry. Highlights of the vehicle include underbody protection, studded tyres, ambient lighting, and roof-mounted lights, all created at SAVWIPL, the release said.

Skoda’s global initiatives like the Azubi Student Car Project emphasise the importance of hands-on learning. These programs offer students practical project management experience, enhancing their understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of automobile manufacturing.
