Hindalco has already announced plans to invest Rs 800 crore to manufacture aluminium foils for batteries.
Metals major Hindalco Industries Limited will manufacture copper foil used in lithium-ion batteries at its upcoming plant in Halol, according to Rohit Pathak, CEO of the company.
Talking to TOI on the sidelines of the 4th edition of RE-INVEST 2024 held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Pathak said the company’s new plant is expected to come up at Halol near Vadodara which will be operational in about three years.

“Copper foils for EV batteries is another important area. Currently, all of this is imported, but with the govt’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, more battery cell manufacturing is taking place in India. We’re planning to produce copper foils, aluminium foils, and specialty aluminium products for EV batteries. The technology used to make copper foils is very new. Currently, it is only available in Japan, Korea, and China. We will be the first to manufacture this in India, collaborating with technology partners,” Pathak said.

Hindalco has already announced plans to invest Rs 800 crore to manufacture aluminium foils for batteries, which is already under construction.

Hindalco is building the country’s largest Copper Inner Groove Tube plant at Waghodia in Vadodara, Pathak said.

“This project will be commissioned by the end of this calendar year and will reduce the import dependence for this key component in air conditioners,” he added.
