Indian Auto LPG Coalition urges govt to include auto LPG in clean mobility narratives.
The Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC) has called upon Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav to endorse auto LPG as an environmentally friendly alternative fuel. In his letter, Suyash Gupta, Director General of Indian Auto LPG Coalition, highlighted the substantial environmental and economic benefits of adopting auto LPG over traditional and other automotive fuels.

Auto LPG, as a clean-burning fuel, significantly reduces emissions of harmful pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide, leading to improved air quality and a reduced carbon footprint. This positions auto LPG as a "Net Zero Hero," aligning with India's international environmental commitments, he said.

Further, Gupta stated, “Auto LPG offers significant environmental benefits by emitting 20% less CO2 compared to petrol and 60% less than diesel. It produces almost no particulate matter, a major cause of air pollution, and has significantly lower nitrogen oxide emissions. In terms of energy security, India imports LPG from multiple countries, ensuring a stable and secure supply chain, thus contributing to energy independence. Auto LPG is also around 40% cheaper than petrol, and the conversion cost for a petrol vehicle to Auto LPG is approximately Rs 30,000, which is much lower than the conversion cost for an EV.”

Indian Auto LPG Coalition urges govt to include auto LPG in clean mobility narratives s, actively engaging with policymakers to integrate Auto LPG into the sustainable development framework. Gupta’s appeal highlights the necessity for supportive fiscal policies that acknowledge auto LPG's role in achieving India's environmental and sustainable development goals.

This emphasis on policy support underscores the value of auto LPG in promoting sustainable growth and addressing the country's environmental challenges. He added, “Huge success of the Ujjwala Yojana has improved LPG infrastructure availability across the country, ensuring a stable supply chain for Auto LPG. Globally, Auto LPG has seen substantial growth, with over 27 million vehicles using it and 25 million tonnes consumed annually.”

The IAC urged for more visible inclusion of auto LPG in the national policy framework for cleaner fuels, alongside EVs and CNG. They propose providing tax incentives and benefits to encourage Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to produce Auto LPG variants. Additionally, they requested a reduction in the GST rate on auto LPG from 18% to 5% to make it more affordable and align it with the GST rate on domestic LPG.
