Delhi govt exempted vehicle owners from paying the annual fee for the vehicle location tracking device.
New Delhi: Delhi govt has provided significant relief to owners of commercial passenger vehicles by exempting them from paying the annual fee for the vehicle location tracking device (VLTD). The exemption will benefit approximately 1.5 lakh public vehicle owners across Delhi. These vehicles include cabs, grameen seva, RTV, tourist taxis and private buses. Previously, the vehicle owners were required to pay an annual fee of INR 1,200 plus 18% GST, amounting to a total of INR 1,416.

The exemption was announced after Delhi’s transport department signed an MoU with National Informatics Centre for the VLTD project. The device has been designed for accurate and real-time vehicle tracking and monitoring.

Transport minister Kailash Gahlot said, “This exemption is a significant step towards easing the financial burden on public vehicle owners while ensuring the safety and security of passengers, especially women and children. We are committed to providing safer and more efficient public transportation in Delhi.”

In 2019, govt had done away with the annual fee of INR 1,200 given by autorickshaw and taxi drivers to Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS) in the name of vehicle tracking. “Now, Delhi govt has taken a big and historic decision to waive the annual fee of the tracking device for all public vehicles,” the minister added.

Gahlot said that the number of public transport vehicles in Delhi was around 2.5 lakh. Govt had already waived the annual fee for VLTD for one lakh auto and taxi drivers. The minister further said that the drivers had been demanding it for a long time.

Earlier, tracking of public transport in Delhi was done by DIMTS, but now, NIC will do this work. NIC’s cloud infrastructure and monitoring centres will ensure continuous, real-time tracking of all vehicles equipped with VLTDs, thereby improving overall public safety.
