Mercedes Benz assembly plant non-compliant with MPCB guidelines

The MPCB has directed its regional officer to take immediate action to ensure that the Mercedes Benz assembly plant complies with all required guidelines.

During a routine inspection on August 23, 2024, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) found that the Mercedes Benz assembly plant in Chakan, Pune, is not meeting pollution control guidelines. This breach is a major concern, especially for a brand of Mercedes Benz's standing in the automotive industry.

Mercedes Benz is widely recognised for its automotive innovations and is expected to lead in sustainable production practices. The non-compliance with MPCB's environmental standards highlights a significant deviation from these expectations.

The MPCB has directed its regional officer to take immediate action to ensure that the Mercedes Benz assembly plant complies with all required guidelines. This process will include a comprehensive review of the plant’s operations and the implementation of corrective measures. As an initial step, the MPCB has forfeited a bank guarantee of 25 lakhs from Mercedes Benz.

“We are committed to upholding high environmental standards and ensuring that all industrial activities within our jurisdiction adhere to pollution control regulations,” stated Mr. Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman, MPCB. “We expect full cooperation from Mercedes Benz in addressing these issues promptly.”

The MPCB emphasised its dedication to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment and will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure compliance.
