The company has already served more than 100,000 customers and installed 101,924 home chargers as well as 5,600 public chargers across India.
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEML) and Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL) have teamed up to promote zero-emissions mobility in India through the combined use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Solar Rooftop Systems. This collaboration aims to install solar rooftop systems for EV customers, create awareness about the benefits of these solutions, and accelerate India’s journey towards Net Zero emissions.

TPEML will assist customers in installing solar rooftop systems via TPREL, while both companies will promote EVs, EV Charging, and Solar Rooftop Systems to their customer bases. The Government of India's PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana offers subsidized solar rooftop installations to 1 crore households, enhancing the appeal of this initiative. Combining EVs and solar power systems can deliver several additional benefits such as reducing the total cost of ownership for EVs, lowering electricity bills for EV owners, accelerating payback on solar investments, and providing 100% emissions-free power for EVs.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in India’s net zero journey. According to him: “India’s net zero journey can only be achieved by switching to EVs and renewable power. We see significant synergies between the customers of EVs and solar rooftop systems. Over 90% of EV customers use home charging and nearly 30% of our EV owners are already using Solar Rooftop Systems. Combining forces with Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd., we intend to democratize zero-emissions mobility and decouple EVs from the grid, while reducing running costs for customers.”

Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD Tata Power, highlighted the complementary nature of solar rooftops and EVs. He stated: “Combination of Solar rooftop and EV is a promising, cost-effective, sustainable solution for India and hence naturally complementary. Both solutions appeal to the same set of eco-friendly and value-conscious customers. We are excited to collaborate with Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. to drive greater adoption of Rooftop Systems and EVs and provide discerning customers with an opportunity to contribute to reducing emissions while saving money.”

Tata Power is actively promoting solar rooftop adoption through its campaign ‘GharGharSolar, Tata Power ke Sangh’ and plans to expand this across the country using its extensive network of over 700 channel partners and retailers. The company has already served more than 100,000 customers and installed 101,924 home chargers as well as 5,600 public chargers across India.

TPREL, with its extensive network of 5,600 public charging points, is strategically positioned across India to provide solar-powered charging solutions. These charging points are located in diverse locations such as highways, hotels, malls, offices, hospitals, and residential complexes, playing a significant role in accelerating e-mobility adoption across the country.

The collaboration between TPEML and TPREL not only aims to promote EVs and solar rooftop systems but also seeks to decouple the well-to-wheel emissions of EVs from the grid mix. This offers a faster route towards achieving net zero emissions in the transportation sector. By integrating these solutions, the initiative offers a sustainable, cost-effective means for customers to reduce their carbon footprint and running costs.

Shailesh Chandra’s assertion aligns with this goal: “We see significant synergies between the customers of EVs and solar rooftop systems.

Praveer Sinha reiterated the mutual benefits provided by combining solar rooftops and EVs: “Combination of Solar rooftop and EV is a promising, cost-effective, sustainable solution for India and hence naturally complementary.

The partnership between TPEML and TPREL is poised to transform India’s mobility landscape by integrating clean energy and zero-emissions vehicles, promoting environmental sustainability, and benefiting eco-conscious consumers across the nation.
