Claverol said the company views the FTA talks “as positive”, and said when implemented, it will not only provide easier access for Italian cars here, but the same for Indian cars to Italy.
The super luxury car market may yet be very small in India, but Italian sports car maker Maserati has decided to expand, banking on the growing number of high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and entrepreneurs.

The company, part of the Stellantis group, is also counting on possible positive outcome from the India-EU FTA talks, which — if they fructify into a deal — will help it import cars at subsidised duty to India.

Maserati on Monday said it is driving in the Grecale SUV to India, priced between INR 1.3 crore and INR 2 crore (ex-showroom), hoping that the growing preference for off-roaders will help it gain volumes.

“India is one of the most dynamic and rapidly-growing markets in the world… it is a fertile market for Maserati,” Philippe Claverol, Head of Overseas Regions for the company, said.

Maserati currently operates out of a single dealership at Mumbai, and Claverol said it will be expanding to Delhi and Bangalore with new retail outlets.

He said the company will introduce the electric version of the Grecale in India going forward. “India has a long-standing appreciation for luxury, and the economic prospects of the country are bright. We are very optimistic.”

With the Grecale, the company looks to offer functionality, luxury, style and performance, widening its customer appeal. The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and has a top speed of 285 km/h.

Claverol said the company views the FTA talks “as positive”, and said when implemented, it will not only provide easier access for Italian cars here, but the same for Indian cars to Italy.

Asked whether it will use the facilities of parent Stellantis for a bigger push, he said front-end functions like retail and marketing will be catered to by Maserati. However, Stellantis’ India offices may be used during the import of cars or for warehousing.
