He said that Goa is a subject of mockery because it does not have Ola or Uber despite being a renowned tourist destination. Now people will mock us if we enhance the fares.
The app-taxi service is here to stay and no one will put a stop to it in Goa, said minister of transport Mauvin Godinho on Friday. His statement comes a day after the clash between tourist taxi operators and GoaMiles drivers in Pernem.

“The law has to take its course. If someone has taken law in their hands, strict action must be taken against them. App-based taxi is here to stay. GoaMiles is here today and will continue to be there in the future. No one can put an end to it,” he said.

He said that Goa is a subject of mockery because it does not have Ola or Uber despite being a renowned tourist destination. Now people will mock us if we enhance the fares.

“Just because a few taxi operators make strong demands against app-based taxis, it doesn’t mean that we ruin the transportation system in Goa. The tourist taxi operators are free to start their own app. Union minister Nitin Gadkari has already given them concession on tolls. There is no meaning behind creating a nuisance. We had brought the Kadamba transport corporation to neutralise the bus mafia, similarly GoaMiles was brought to neutralise the private taxis,” he said.

On the need to inculcate road discipline, he said the onus lies on enforcement officers of the transport department as well.

“There will be less accidents if there is discipline and we seem to have forgotten that enforcement is our job. Sometimes, we see the Goa police traffic cell has taken over while the transport department’s officers are absent,” he said. He directed the officers “to take the job a little seriously,” and ensure people do not violate traffic rules.
