Tram-like electric buses with three interconnected units and a capacity of 132 seats is being tested on Nagpur's ring road and will soon be introduced on a large scale, said Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday.

Gadkari, who was speaking at the Pagariya JBN Mahakumbh, said the buses have been made in collaboration with Skoda and Tata. With ticket rates less than 30% that of diesel buses, the innovative system combines three buses and charges wirelessly within a minute.

"I visited the Skoda manufacturing unit in Czechoslovakia. Being a minister connected with the field, I asked the company to work with the Tatas to make the buses. which have a wireless charging facility," said the minister.

These fully air-conditioned buses will feature amenities such as packaged food, CCTV surveillance, and laptop holders at each seat.

On the progress of the project, Gadkari said an agreement with the NMC will be finalized soon. He expressed confidence that investment in this project will be recouped within three years of launch.

The three-time city MP also said that Vidarbha farmers will produce the most affordable aviation fuel, which will be used to refuel aircrafts at the Nagpur airport. Highlighting city's Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, he envisioned Nagpur becoming an international airport hub. He said that production of 76,000 tonnes of bio-aviation fuel annually will be possible in the region.
