Mumbai Local Train Services Suspended in Borivali Station; Delay Causes Crowding at Metro Stations

Mumbai’s local train services hit a snag for the third day in a row, with operations suspended on the western line this time due to technical issues. After disruptions in the central line for almost two days, the Western Railway on Monday said suburban trains are not operational on platforms 1 and 2 of Borivali station following cable cuts.

This disruption has led to crowding in other railway stations on the Churchgate-Borivali-Dahanu western line with the situation escalating at the Borivali, Kurar and Rashtriya Udyan Metro stations with people looking for other commute options to reach their destinations. For this, the Metro authorities said they have released four additional train sets to accommodate the surging crowds.

Metropolitan commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee said Metro services have been added to alleviate the rush on lines 2A and 7. “Currently, four extra train sets have been added on Metro lines 2A and 7. The provision of additional services with extra train sets will continue until the situation normalises. In light of overcrowding at different metro stations, we have taken the decision to run extra services. Normally, 21 train sets operate during peak hours, but today a total of 24 train sets are in service. We are committed to providing services during emergency situations,” he said.

A Western Railway spokesperson said suburban trains were not being operated from platforms 1 and 2 but are running as usual on the other six platforms. The operations at Borivali station were disrupted due to the cable being cut that rendered some track changing points non-operational. The faulty points are being clamped and restoration work is on to resume normal operations, the official said. Earlier, only slow trains were running late by 15 to 20 minutes but now all suburban train services have been suspended on platforms 1 and 2 of Borivali.

“Due to some technical issues of cable being cut, point no 107/108, point no 111/112 & point no 131/132 are not operational currently therefore suburban trains not being operated from platform nos 1 & 2 of Borivali Station. Trains are being operated from platform nos 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 at Borivali station. Point Nos 107, 108 & 111 are being clamped and restoration work is ongoing at priority to restore normalcy,” the Western Railway said in a tweet.

Borivali is one of the busiest railway stations in north Mumbai, with a large number of commuters and office-goers using local train services from there every day. The Western Railway daily operates more than 1,300 suburban services and around 30 lakh commuters travel on its network, spread between Churchgate in south Mumbai and Dahanu in neighbouring Palghar district.

For the past two days, at least 900 local train services were cancelled due to a 36-hour mega block on the central line. But, the Central Railway said this has now been cleared and trains are operating as usual.
