Apple has long relied on its Face ID technology (located in the wide notch/Dynamic Island) for security and authentication purposes. However, it takes up a significant percentage of the screen when compared to a phone with only a little punch-hole cutout. Now, it is said that Samsung has found a way to incorporate its version of the Face ID technology that takes up less space and is far more safe.
According to X user, Haizaki Ryouhei, Samsung will release PolarID, its FaceID counterpart, with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in 2025. He stated that the technology has reached the pre-market stage and, unlike Apple Face ID, does not require any additional sensors and will not take up much space.
This means Samsung will release its new technology with only a punch-hole design. The post even said that PolarID will be more secure and effective than FaceID and other forms of facial recognition.
Additionally, PolarID will also use the computational power of Qualcomm Snapdragon as well as Samsung LSI’s manufacturing power. The tipster even claimed that the Samsung ISOCELL Vizion 931 is already in the testing stage and may make its way onto the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
In contrast, another user, Sawyer Galox, claimed that the technology is not compatible with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Instead, he asserted that the answer is available on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The reason for this is that Samsung is taking its time inventing to mimic Apple’s Face ID technology.
However, this would also alter the dynamics of the Samsung-Apple situation. This is because Apple is reportedly planning a significant redesign of the iPhone for release the following year. It will be a real all-screen device and may switch to an under-screen or punch-hole sensor by then. When that occurs, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra's PolarID—which is housed inside the punch-hole cutout—will have to contend with Apple’s all-screen iPhone.
Samsung may continue to provide an in-display fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S26 Ultra to provide customers with more biometric options than Apple.
