The 77th Cannes Film Festival’s opening red carpet ceremony was a stylish soiree. The opening film Le Deuxième Acte (The Second Act) which was screened at Palais des Festivals, Cannes, France, saw an array of celebrities from across the globe attend in their finest couture pieces.

With icons such as Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Heidi Klum and Greta Gerwig among others making a statement with their respective looks, here’s a look at how celebs owned the red carpet on the iconic stars at the opening ceremony.

Jane Fonda in an Elie Saab jumpsuit.

Sharp silhouettes met opulent gowns when fashion took over the red carpet. Be it Jane Fonda’s Elie Saab pre-fall 2019 jumpsuit with a sequin embroidered bodice or Meryl Streep’s timeless custom Dior haute couture dress, the red carpet was all about making a statement.

If not black or white, the colour palette did lean towards the all-time favourite red. Heidi Klum made heads turn in a Saiid Kobeisy fiery couture gown. The opulent off-shoulder gown that came with a train matched Heidi energy on the carpet. Thus adding some drama to her overall style.

You know the red carpet is incomplete without sequins and 77th Cannes Film Festival jury president for the main competition and filmmaker-actor Greta Gerwig didn’t disappoint. Dolled up in a burgundy sequin dress, Greta looked stunning in the jewel tone. Giving her company with her own share of sequin bling was jury member and actor Lily Gladstone.

While the silhouettes added the glam quotient on the red carpet it was the jewellery pieces adorned by the stars that made it a sparkling opening ceremony. From Meryl Streep’s Hanut pendant earrings from Fred Leighton jewellery to Taylor Hill’s multi layered artistic luminous necklace, each design stood out on the red carpet.

The 77th Cannes Film Festival will culminate on May 25 and like every year, this year there are an array of celebrities attending the festival. The opening ceremony was attended by Virginie Ledoyen, Palina Rojinski, Lea Seydoux, Vicky Krieps, Juliette Binoche, Matthias Schweighöfer, Paola Turani, Rose Bertram, Louis Garrel, Shanina Shaik, Farhana Bodi, Camille Cottin among others.
