Met Gala 2024 has unfurled its carpet to host the biggest night in fashion and the best in the fields of art, fashion, film and music are here to celebrate the Metropolis Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.

Representing India in a timeless Sabyasachi couture saree, Alia Bhatt graced the green and white carpet looking straight out of a fairytale. Adhering to the dress code ‘The Garden of Time’, the hand embroidered saree with floral motifs and sparkling detailing was completed with a dramatic long embroidered train.

Highlighting the effort gone into creating this stunning saree, Alia shared how elated she was to adorn this piece at the Met Gala 2024. Speaking to Ashley Graham before she stepped on the carpet, when asked how she was feeling, Alia said, “I am feeling great. I am feeling very excited. It is my second time at the Met Gala, but it is the first time I am wearing a saree.”

The saree designed by renowned couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee who also walked the carpet this year, took 1965 man hours and around 163 artisans to bring this vision to life. What we love about Alia is that she looked so proud about representing India in a silhouette she holds close to her heart. “When I thought of the dress code ‘Garden of Time’, I felt it needed something timeless and nothing is more timeless than a sari,” expressed Alia.

She further added, “It has taken a lot of love, labour and a lot of effort and anything that takes a lot of love and time lasts forever, just like the garden of time.”

The saree was paired with a sheer embroidered blouse with bow detailing on the back. The shimmery gold fringes on the hem added a dramatic bling to the overall desi look. Another sparkling moment in Alia’s look is the bespoke high jewellery featuring a matha patti, maang tika and earrings designed by Sabyasachi.
