Every child is different and so are their sleeping patterns. While some like to sleep with pillows and blankets, others prefer to just have their toy with them. It can be quite difficult as a parent to get your child to sleep in their own room at night, after they have developed a habit of sleeping in your bed. This habit is fine till they are young. But, parents need to make sure that their kid learns to sleep alone. Ever since a child is born, they form a strong attachment with their parents. Sleeping with a baby is important to make sure that they do not fall off the bed or crib, or to feed them at night. Once your kid begins to grow up, make sure they begin to sleep alone.

If the child wants to sleep alone, do not stop them. If this behaviour is encouraged, at a later stage, the child will only sleep when the parents are around. Here are a few ways you can help your child to start sleeping alone:

Don’t force your kid

When you start off, do not force your child to sleep alone. You could start off by letting them sleep alone once or twice a week. Gradually, increase the number of days for them to sleep alone. As they get used to it, they can then sleep alone regularly.

Tuck your kid to bed

Every night before your little one hits the bed, make sure to prep the kids. Put them in their night dresses, tuck them into the bed and wrap them in the blanket. You can sit next to them and narrate a good story and read out their favourite book.

Keep the lights on

In case your child feels afraid of sleeping in the dark, you can switch on a dim lamp. It may be difficult for them at first and they might come to you to sleep in your bed. As parents, it is your responsibility to break this habit and let them sleep alone.

Suitable age

The suitable age to get your children to sleep separately from you is age 8. After this, the kid will enter the adolescence period. As they enter their teens, their ability to cope also begins.
