It falls on the Shukla Paksha Navami, thus observed on the ninth day of the Chaitra month, also marking the conclusion of the Chaitra Navratri festival. According to the Hindu calendar, Chaitra Navratri is celebrated in March or April.

This year, Ram Navami falls on April 17. According to Drik Panchang, Lord Ram was born during the Madhyanha period (midday), which is thus considered the most auspicious time to perform Ram Navami puja rituals.

Ram Navami puja vidhi includes 16 major steps which are to be followed:

  1. Devotees should begin by meditating in front of Lord Ram’s idol.
  2. After meditation, one should chant a mantra in front of the murti by keeping the Avahan Mudra.
  3. Next, flowers are offered to Lord Ram to give him a seat while continuing the mantra.
  4. After offering a seat to Lord Ram, his feet are washed with water (Padya offering).
  5. Next, offer water for Abhishekam.
  6. After the Arghya offering, devotees offer water to Lord Ram for drinking.
  7. Offer honey and milk next while chanting a mantra.
  8. Next, offer water for a bath.
  9. After snanam, give a bath of panchamrita (a mix of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar) to Lord Ram.
  10. Now, offer new clothes to the deity.
  11. After the vastra offering, offer Yajnopavita (a sacred thread) to Lord Ram.
  12. Next, offer a scent.
  13. Offer flowers while praying to Lord Ram.
  14. Next, take Gandha, Akshata and Pushpa and worship those gods, who are body parts of Shri Ram (Anga Puja).
  15. After that, offer Dhupa (incense sticks), Deep (lamp), Naivedya, Phalam (fruits), Tambulam (paan with betel nuts) and Dakshina (a gift).
  16. Lastly, conclude the puja vidhi by performing an aarti, pushpanjali, pradakshina and seeking kshamapana (apology).

Devotees, while seeking blessings for themselves and their families through the puja rituals and offerings, also observe fast during the day.
