Many Indians dream of going on a foreign trip, but the dream often remains unfulfilled due to financial constraints. However, numerous enchanting destinations in India itself might fascinate the tourists with their beauty.

If you are fond of travelling, there are many to explore in India. One such hidden gem is Dawki Lake, situated in a small village in Meghalaya, promising mesmerising natural beauty to the visitors.

Dawki Lake – known as Umngot River – located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, is the best place to visit during the summers. The lake is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and is surrounded by lush green hills. Rows of bamboo trees and colourful flowers on the banks of the lake make this place even more beautiful.

Dawki Lake, located near Mawlynnong village, was named the cleanest village in Asia in 2003. The villagers, very conscious about cleanliness, have banned the use of plastic.

The lake, located on the borders of India and Bangladesh, can be reached easily, by taking a taxi ride of 80 km from Shillong. You can enjoy boating in Dawki Lake. Take a walk by the lake or enjoy the mountains. You can also enjoy local cuisine by sitting in small restaurants built on the banks of the lake.

Taking to X (formally Twitter), the Ministry of Jal Shakti declared in 2021 that the river is the cleanest in the country.

One of the cleanest rivers in the world. It is in India. River Umngot, 100 Kms from Shillong, in Meghalaya state. It seems as if the boat is in air; water is so clean and transparent. Wish all our rivers were as clean. Hats off to the people of Meghalaya. pic.twitter.com/aBIb4TwP2r— Department of Water Resources, RD&GR, MoJS, GoI (@DoWRRDGR_MoJS) October 1, 2021
