Chhath puja is celebrated twice a year during the Chaitra and Kartik months, as per the Hindu calendar. It is considered one of the most auspicious festivals in India. Dedicated to Chhathi Maiyya and Surya Dev (Lord Sun), the festival is observed over a span of four days, beginning with Nahay Khay and culminating with Usha Arghya on the last day. Chaiti Chhath is celebrated in the Shukla Paksha Shasthi of Chaitra month, during the Chaitra Navratri celebration. It is also referred to as Yamuna Chhath, believed to be the day when the river Yamuna came down to earth, denoting the birth of Goddess Yamuna.

On the second day of Chhath, i.e., Kharna, devotees keep a fast from morning to night, following which they have rasiya kheer and roti at night.

It is after the ritual that devotees begin their 36-hour fast all through the third day, which finally ends in the early hours of the fourth day. During this time, the Sandhya Arghya (evening offerings) and Usha Arghya (morning offerings) are among the most important rituals. Devotees stand in the water and pray to the setting sun and the rising sun.
