Aadhaar, a unique identification document in India, offers security features like locking. This can be helpful if you suspect misuse. However, there might be times you need to unlock it again. If you’re facing trouble unlocking your Aadhaar or facing a problem logging in on the myAadhaar app or website, here is a step-by-step guide for you.

In case you see an error like ‘Aadhaar already locked by Aadhaar holder’ and when you try to unlock it by entering your existing virtual ID, it shows errors like ‘Technical error’ or ‘technical exception’, you need to generate a new VID. Here’s the step-by-step guide for you:

Before You Begin: The Magic of VID

Unlocking your Aadhaar requires a 16-digit Virtual ID (VID). Think of it as a temporary alias for your Aadhaar number for security purposes. You need to generated a VID first.

There are two ways to get your VID:

Online: Visit the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) website (https://uidai.gov.in/en/) and navigate to the “My Aadhaar” section. Look for the “Generate Virtual ID” service. You’ll need your Aadhaar number and registered mobile number for this.

SMS: Send an SMS to 1947 with the message “GVID Last 4 digits of your Aadhaar number”. For example, if your Aadhaar number ends in 1234, send “GVID 1234”. You’ll receive your VID via SMS on your registered mobile number.

Forgot Your VID? No Problem.

If you’ve misplaced your VID, you can retrieve it using SMS. Send “RVID Last 4 or 8 digits of your Aadhaar number” to 1947. You’ll receive your VID on your registered mobile number.

Unlocking Your Aadhaar: Two Methods

Now that you have your VID, you can unlock your Aadhaar using either the UIDAI website or the mAadhaar app.

Method 1: Using the UIDAI Website

Step 1: Visit the UIDAI website (https://uidai.gov.in/en/) and go to “My Aadhaar” again.

Step 2: Click on “Aadhaar Lock/Unlock” services.

Step 3: Select the “Unlock” option.

Step 4: Enter your VID and the security code displayed on the screen.

Step 5: Choose how you want to receive a One-Time Password (OTP) for verification – either via SMS or TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) generated by the mAadhaar app (if installed).

Step 6: Enter the OTP and submit. Your Aadhaar should be unlocked now.

Method 2: Using the mAadhaar App

Step 1: Download and install the mAadhaar app from the official app store.

Step 2: Open the app and log in using your registered mobile number and OTP.

Step 3: Go to the “Lock/Unlock Aadhaar” section.

Step 4. Select “Unlock Aadhaar” and follow the on-screen instructions.

You’ll likely need your VID and OTP for verification.

Important Reminders

  • Keep your VID confidential and don’t share it with anyone.
  • Ensure your registered mobile number is active for receiving OTPs.
  • For any issues or assistance, visit the UIDAI website’s Help section or contact their support channels.

By following these steps, you should be able to unlock your Aadhaar and use it for various services again.
