To qualify for the Safer Choice Award, a car model must fulfill several requirements.
Global NCAP has awarded Tata Motors the Safer Choice Award for their Tata Safari and Harrier models. These vehicles achieved a five-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection in Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. Tata Motors further ensured these models met Global NCAP's performance criteria for safety systems like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and speed assistance systems.

What it demonstrates

The Safer Choice Award is Global NCAP’s highest accolade for safety performance in the Indian car market. Tata Motors has met the updated criteria set forth in August 2024, which include achieving five-star ratings in adult and child occupant protection, as well as meeting specific performance standards for safety technologies.

To qualify for the Safer Choice Award, a car model must fulfill several requirements. These include obtaining a five-star Global NCAP rating for both adult and child occupant protection. Additionally, the vehicle must be equipped with a speed assistance system and achieve a full score in Global NCAP’s test criteria. The car must also offer AEB, for both car-to-car and vulnerable road users, and meet UN regulatory performance requirements. Furthermore, BSD should be available as a stand-alone option and meet Global NCAP’s criteria.

David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation, said, “Tata Motors’ continuing commitment to vehicle safety is very welcome and we are pleased to present the first of our new Safer Choice Awards to them for the Safari and Harrier.”

“Encouraging automakers to achieve ever higher levels of protection, for occupants as well as more vulnerable road users, is at the heart of Global NCAP’s safety mission. We are grateful for the ongoing support and leadership Tata Motors has demonstrated on their road safety journey."

Mohan Savarkar, Vice President and Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, remarked, “We are proud to have received the Global NCAP Safer Choice Award for our flagship SUVs, the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier. We have continued to be the pioneers in driving the safety conversation – ensuring that our commitment reflects in every vehicle we manufacture, regardless of price point. With this mission at the forefront, not only is our entire portfolio the highest star rated in their respective segment, but we have gone a step further by having the only SUV line-up in India which is completely 5-star rated, setting a benchmark for the passenger vehicles industry to follow.”

He added, ‘’This recognition today, underscores our unwavering commitment to safety and innovation, ensuring that our customers experience not only comfort and performance, but also the highest standards of safety. We are thankful to the entire Global NCAP team for supporting us in full strength as we continue to make safer cars for India.’’

Commitment towards road safety

Tata Motors has demonstrated a solid commitment to road safety, integrating advanced safety features and ensuring their vehicles meet stringent global standards. According to Global NCAP, these efforts not only set a high standard in the Indian automotive industry but also reinforce the importance of vehicle safety for consumers.

The Global NCAP Safer Choice Award was launched in 2018 to motivate automakers to improve safety standards. With Tata Motors receiving this award, the company is acknowledged for its significant strides in ensuring top-notch safety in their vehicles sold in India. The inclusion of advanced safety systems such as AEB, BSD, and speed assistance in the Tata Safari and Harrier signifies a leap forward in automotive safety technology.

Tata Motors' achievement highlights the growing importance of vehicle safety for both the industry and consumers. With these developments, Tata Motors aims to maintain its leadership in vehicle safety and continue setting benchmarks in the Indian automotive market.
