Transport minister Mauvin Godinho assured financial assistance to motorcycle pilots in Goa.

Panaji: Transport minister Mauvin Godinho assured financial assistance to motorcycle pilots in Goa on Thursday, including upgrading their existing two-wheelers to electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement came during the inauguration of the motorcycle pilots’ shade stand at the KTC Panaji bus stand, a facility that has been a long-standing request of the pilots’ community.

“We are working on a scheme that could include a pension plan or financial assistance for upgrading to better bikes. The old bikes are unsafe for both pilots and their clients, and we can help them transition to EV bikes with govt support,” he said.

He also acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by motorcycle pilots. “Motorcycle pilots have endured many difficulties over the years, especially with increasing competition from rent-a-bike services that have impacted their business. We have already stopped the renewal and issuance of new licences for rent-a-bike and rent-a-cab services. However, we will continue to support motorcycle pilots by granting them permits to operate,” he said.

TOI had reported on Aug 29 that the Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera is setting up the new facility, which accommodates 20 motorcycle taxis and includes drinking water facilities and a seating area.
