New Delhi: The Delhi Traffic Police brass held a meeting on Wednesday with the National Highways Authority of India to discuss easing of traffic congestion on the national highway stretches within the city.

The traffic officers are learnt to have requested NHAI to widen the road at Kalindi Kunj and shift the bus stop at the Mukarba Chowk to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar to reduce congestion on these busy stretches. The city's traffic chief, special commissioner Ajay Chaudhary, and NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, discussed a range of traffic issues, including the installation of speed cameras on NH-24 at the Kalyanpuri circle and the erection of cautionary signboards at the Ghazipur toll plaza.

Chaudhary also requested the deployment of traffic marshals and proper signage on NH-48 to ensure smooth movement of traffic. There were other suggestions too, among them the installation of rumble strips and iron grilles on NH-44 near Mukarba Chowk, putting up of signboards at Meethapur Chowk and the installation of iron grilles on Badarpur flyover, officials said.

NHAI was asked to share details of locations where ongoing construction was impeding traffic flow so that an alternative strategy could be planned for such routes. There were requests also for construction of a subway near the Rangpuri traffic lights on Mahipalpur flyover and the construction of an underground tunnel from Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3 to NH-48 on the Dwarka road.

“There are several stretches in Delhi that are affected by vehicles using the national highways. There needs to be proper communication and coordination between Delhi Traffic Police and NHAI to ensure the smooth flow of traffic across the city," the special CP said. "A joint endeavour and collaboration of various stakeholders, including agencies such as Delhi Transport Corporation, Union ministry of road transport and highways and NHAI, will play a vital role in reducing road accidents and easing traffic congestion in Delhi.”

The NHAI chief is learnt to have responded positively to the traffic police requests and will revert on the suggestions at the earliest, sources said.
